Dear AntsCanada Team and other Ant Hobbyists,

On April 10, 2017 I found six queen ants, and I need help identifying their species. My best evaluation is laces imperious.

Size: 8.5 Millimeters long, average

Notes: -They do not have any visible hair
-Kept in test tube setup
-Kept at 72°F
-They wander around the tube
-Drink a lot of water
-No eggs, yet
-No food given
-They have groomed/cleaned themselves already
-Kept in a dark undisturbed place, a wood drawer
-Checked on every morning and night


On April 12, 2017 I found one black queen ant, and I need help identifying her species. My best evaluation is a camponotus Sp. but I'm not sure.

Notes: -Not very active
-Will move to warmer room, 78 F, once purchased heating cable
-Has small hairs
-Almost always stays on cotton
-No eggs, yet
-No food given
-Kept at 72°F
-Kept in test tube setup
-Kept in a dark undisturbed place, a wood drawer

Size: 9.5 Millimeters

So, first, the blank ant is Camponotus but just a worker I do believe. And the other golden colored ones look like the famous winter ant, Prenolepis imparis. Though I just glanced. I do know the black is just a worker though.

First one is a Prenolepis imparis queen and not sure about the second.
Also Prenolepis imparis prefer colder temperatures around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the reason they are called winter ants.

Thank you for the feed back. I wasn't sure if the black ant was a worker, because the other ants it was near were a lot smaller, maybe 2 millimeters.

Does anyone know of a post that can help me with taking care of Prenolepis imparis colony?

Also does anyone know when the queens might lay eggs?

The Prenolepis Imparis queens were all over the ground it seemed like every time I turned around there was one on the ground. After seven they stopped coming. I accidentally made a human error and killed a queen. Now done to six.

They won't lay any eggs. Should I just keep waiting and be patient? Any advice?

I already have watched the video, but I guess I can watch it again. Does any one have any other sources of information, on the Prenolepis Imparis queens?

While I was outside on 4/10/17 there were hundreds of flying ant like insects. I wasn't sure if they were queen ants or not, so I didn't capture any. That may have been a sign that there was a super nuptial flight, I don't know.

Yea it normally takes them a while to start up ....... leave them alone in the dark for a while (Like 2 weeks) and check on them .....
