Central Coast NSW Australia ID please
Caught this beauty on the pavement on 31/01/2017 in South East Australia, Central Coast NSW 2261. Ran in very straight direct lines and very fast. Around 12mm in length.

You are going to need to take closer and clearer pictures of the antennae and rest of the body.Jefferyguo wrote:Caught this beauty on the pavement on 31/01/2017 in South East Australia, Central Coast NSW 2261. Ran in very straight direct lines and very fast. Around 12mm in length.

I'm fairly sure it's Campotonus sp. and if that is right we are gonna need a microscope to even take an attempt at identifying its species. There are 77 different species of Campotonus in NSW alone.
- Rhytidoponera metallica
- Camponotus consobrinus x2
- **** sp.
- Nylanderia sp.
- Melaphorus sp.
- Camponotus cairns
- Crematogaster sp.
- Colobopsis sp.
- Myrmecia nigrocinta
- Iridomyrmex purpureus
- Camponotus eastwoodi

Thanks mate, I don't have any means of getting a macro shot of the ant (unless you know any tricks) but its good to know that it is a Camponotus spp.

An ID for an area with 77 different species of a given genus requires some very detailed photographs. Sorry.

Sorry to be a pain, I got some other forum suggesting its Camponotus lownie. What do you think?
Re: Central Coast NSW Australia ID please
There seem to be multiple species with similar colouration in NSW. Camponotus oetkeri, for instance, looks similar.
