Re: AM1C39's Journal (many colonies)
So heres what happened: I bought a tiny container containing about 100 mealworms at a pet store for 5 dolars. Whene I got home I made a little farm for them, witch was just a container half full of oats and bits of cardboard and some food and then put them in. After a long time some mold broke out at the bottem of the container and it was at the bottem so I was not sure how to get ride of it easily so I left it and well... The smell is abselutly terrible, all the oats just turned black and the bettle pupae had mold all over them... I can't say anymore, I failled so bad .

You can use a sieve to remove all the mealworms from the oatmeal and discard all of the old oatmeal. Also I seperate the pupae from the larvae because I had the larvae eat the pupae alive . I successfully bred mealworms but due to multiple Pharaoh ant raids, I lost 2/3 of my small sized mealworms, 80-90% of my larger mealworms and many dead beetles. Now I had to restart the whole proccess with new mealworms. Now Pharoah ants are my least favorite ant species >:(.AM1C39 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 07, 2021 10:26 amSo heres what happened: I bought a tiny container containing about 100 mealworms at a pet store for 5 dolars. Re: AM1C39's Journal (many colonies)
Yikes! I didn't know pharaoh ants went after mealworms as well!
Maybe you could possibly try using wood shavings instead of oatmeal? I think that is the substrate the mealworms come with. If not then try replacing the oats frequently.

I used oats because I know that they eat them and not just nest in it, I will use wood ships next time. also pharoah ants have always been my least favorite ant species too.
