I found this ant while walking through the backyard and I noticed that it was unusually long for an ant. I can't tell if it's a male or not, and I'm really confused about what it is if it is even an ant at all. It's about five millimeters long.

Re: What is this ant?
Ponera pennsylvanica queen. These are semi-claustral and otherwise difficult to keep. Read up on journals and external resources.
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.
Re: What is this ant?
I did some digging online and it looks that they require a lot of care and the rate of starting a successful colony in captivity is pretty low. Might be better to release her :/.
