Sup, I have now prepared an outworld for my ants. But, I dont really know what barrier I should use!?!!?

What are the options?

I have heard of PTFE (at least thats what I think its called) but where do I find it?

I have also heard of babypowder, how do I prepare that?

Thanks!

Three popular options:

Fluon (PTFE)- Best, most expensive, hardest to acquire. I just ordered some, myself, and waiting for it to be delivered. My advice would be to check out some other sites that sell formicaria, and find one closest to you (maybe antkit). Your goal here is to find the lowest shipping cost.

Baby Powder w/ Rubbing Alcohol- Cheap, mostly effective. Ratio isn't really important. The baby powder is the barrier, and the alcohol is used to get it to stick. Works better for some species over others (although, the same can be said for any of these methods, including Fluon)

Vaseline- Easiest to apply, messy, stinky. I use this for my semi-claustral queen setups, because they can't climb, anyway.

These are the most commonly used, experiment and see what works best for your ants. There are also other ant deterrents, such as chalk, citrus, etc. but I never really see any of those discussed here.

Iv'e been wondering too. Because all my camponotus colonies have always gotten past my barrier, including fluon and Vaseline. Iv'e always applied both in every spot they some how always get past

Yes.There is a lid, too. It is all I had on hand at the time. I wasn't prepared when I found the queens. The bigger problem for me is that there are no connection holes in the tupperware they are in. Transferring them to something else should be... interesting.

I was just saying that my particular queens can't climb, so I wasn't too worried about it at the moment.
