Think about it, you say you won't harm the ants but you can't be a 100% sure when digging them up or tearing apart logs or anything going after a mature colony. As you are digging the soil is moving in all directions possibly squishing any workers and or the queen. The Brood will be unorganized and there will be total chaos among them pretty much. And like was stated before, there is no guarantee that you will even find the queen. Ant keeping takes patience and a lot of it at times. Not trying to be rude by no means but if you can't be patient enough to wait and find a queen then maybe you should think about keeping a different pet. If its an invasive species then most people think it's okay to do so. That's where you would need to make sure what species it is first. There are so many new people wanting to keep ants now but most are going about it this way and it's just not right. Have patience and in the end it's such a better experience.
