It can be something small like a tupperware at first, but the colony will need more space as it grows larger and larger. mix up a runny paste of talcum powder and rubbing alcohol to paint along the edges of the container. After it dries, ants will not be able to walk out. You should feed them soft-bodied insects like Drosophila flies (available to order online or at many pet supply shops).
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.

If you have spiders around the house and you're sure that there are no pesticides used closeby you can catch a few small spiders and store them in the freezer. Put them into warm water for a few minutes before feeding them to your ants.
A careful cut in the dead spider's abdomen also helps a lot, that way the ants can immediately start to drink it's body fluids and don't have to crack it open first (which could be hard for a single nanitic worker).
