Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings
It's been warm these past few weeks, has anyone seen anything? I'm afraid I'm going to miss it and be antless the rest of the year
I've seen ants out and about. I think I saw some termite alates. I observes a major worker coming out for the first time since winter in a small colony in my back yard. However, I have yet to see any nuptial flights here in western Ky

Once it gets into the 70s for good we'll see action,

I was just walking around in the woods on a sunny day with my ant equipment and found these queens. They are parasitic though so fairly difficult to start a colony with, but I think it's a sign that camponotus will fly soon.xTNxANTMANx wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2017 7:08 pmI'm right under you in West TN and seen some Camponotus drones last week around a light pole at my work around 8pm-ish. We've had a week of rain here in Illinois, one day of sun, one day of overcast, and now they are calling for five more days of rain. Hopefully after that it will get sunny and we will start seeing some ants.

Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings
Just a heads up: I was looking for queens and found about 4 different colonies of camponotus species. I noticed them digging, which is strange because they wouldn't be making new nests this early. Then I remembered, to prepare for nuptial flight ants tend to widen their entrances to allow the larger males and females out. I noticed the same activity in all colonies. Be on the look-out, If I don't get a queen this year I don't know what I'm going to do with myself
Re: OH-KY-IN-IL-MI Nuptial Flight Sightings
These definitely flew Sunday (4/9/17) - I caught a dozen queens yesterday afternoon from about 1:30 CST to 4.
Gonna try to get out today again and see if I can find some more wandering around.

Around where are you located? It was in the 80's here in Ky but it was really windy, I went looking and didn't see any flights, a lot of busy workers but no queens or males.

Northern Illinois in Rockford - I think nuptial flights are over now, but I did find a prenolepis imparis queen underneath a log Saturday.warhawk373 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2017 9:03 amAround where are you located? The day that they were flying it was really windy, probably gusts at 20-30 mph so that won't stop them.
EDIT: Also found a camponotus pennsylvannicus queen on 4/14 down in central Illinois, so camponotus are starting to fly/flying very soon.

That's great! Nuptial flight season has just begun, and I've found a Prenolepis imparis colony with reproductive larvae still.
At a school, I found these genera:
Crematogaster
Brachymyrmex
Ponera
Solenopsis
Camponotus
Formica Lasius
Monomorium
Tetramorium
Prenolepis
Aphaenogaster
