i digged up a fire ant colony and it was 1 inch wide and about only a centermeter high. i digged about 5 - 6 inches deep and im wondering if i went deep enough. the hole did not have any more ants running around after i digged them up. did i go deep enough?

Digging is not a very good way to find a queen. You should wait until a nuptial flight. :D
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.

How are your ants doing? I am brand new to ants and I tried something similar with several colonies recently and my ants mostly have died. I have four colonies still alive but only one seems to act like what I would think a good colony would act like. I don't know enough about how a normal colony would act though, so maybe all of them will be dead soon.
