Hello
Need help in determining if these two ants are queens
Found both ants in my school garden around 3:30PM
there are two colonies, one in the garden harvesting nectar and the other nests between the pavement bricks
(this is another long and boring intro so skip it whenever possible)
I walked around and saw something moving on the pavement,at first I thought it was a fly so i scared it so it will fly away,
but it didn't.
I took a closer look and recognized that it is a Polyrhachis sp,but what caught my attention is its unusual size and big thorax.
caught it with a worker just within a meter(cant find anymore workers or nest site) and examined them.
Tried to find the colony, but found another colony that has trails on some red passion flower vines, harvesting nectar then i spotted this one bulky figure and caught it.she was slightly smaller than Polyrhachis1,but it has a similar figure
Captured ants:
Pavement Colony:
-Polyhrachis1
Size:8mm
-worker (for comparison with Polyrhachis1 and Polyrhachis2)
Size:5mm
Garden Colony:
-Polyhrachis2
Size:7mm
Pictures: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4Dvdu7vMZFOemtIVmhQbXRWTVE (copy-paste link in new tab)
Both ants are calm in their zip lock plastic bags
Polyrhachis1 was found wandering around wingless with only one worker in a 1 meter radius,no other worker spotted
She might be foraging for food since polyrhachisants are semi-claustral
Polyrhachis2 was found on trails around the nest, wingless
I honestly have no clue for this one, since alates won't take off their wings before nuptial flight and a queen wont leave her cell
My last thought is that unless that they are majors, they are queens
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am very clueless right now
thanks

Re: Polyhrachis queen?
Hey! Sorry no one has replied to this yet. I think the green one looks a lot like a queen. She is probably a very interesting species. But, Could we have pictures of all your ants from the side? They look queen like, but I would like more pics. Also, make sure you put them in a proper test tube setup and make sure they are all separated.FelloAntKeeper wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2017 8:56 amHello

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Re: Polyhrachis queen?
I believe both are queens. Polyrachis is a possibility. Remember, these are semi-claustral

Not too certain about its genus; but they're definitely queens.

Sorry for the inactivity, been struggling with my mid-test
unfortunately, Polyrhachis1 died and Polyrhachis2 escaped
but I found another one in my housing complex's sidewalk, exactly just like Polyrhachis1
thanks for the help guys!
