Ants making their own formicariums?

So for an ant nest, I wondered if I could transfer my test tube colony into a sand-ant farm. But, I'm wondering if the workers could dig through the sand and make their own formicariums. Would this be possible? Do I need to do apply specific things for it to work?

They will, it's just that these farms have some flaws. Like making moist is mostly only possible by pouring water on the top of it and it has the risk of drowning or destroying existing tunnels
Also you'll probably need to connect it to an outworld anyways for foraging area and graveyard/trash pile

Also if it works in general depends on the species. Some ants dig, some don't.
