Does anyone know of any unique ant species besides prenolepis imparis that live near or in Rhode Island?

There's always Stigmatotomma pallipes, the Dracula ant. Those are pretty rare.

Wood ants like Formica exsectoides I suppose could be counted as unique.

Don't forget Lasius and Formica social parasites!

There are loads of unusual ants in New England: Ponera, Stigmatomma, Proceratium, Dolichoderus, Strumigenys, our many social parasites (i.e. Lasius latipes, Tetramorium atratulum, Formica querquetulana, Aphaenogaster tennesseensis). It takes knowledge and exploration to find unusual and exciting ants where you live. Don't capture mature colonies, though, as they are unlikely to survive in captivity unless raised from queen (it's also unethical to remove uncommon species from the wild).

Camponotus castaneus isn't exactly rare, but what a beauty!
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.

Camponotus castaneus is my dream species. I have been doing some research and hope their time to fly here in TH is upon me soon. If I could get me say...1 successful colony of them and C. pennsylvanicus, and my C. subbarbatus, I'd be content to the max!
Keeping:
Camponotus subbarbatus
Formica pallidefulva x2
Formica subsericea x4
Lasius sp
Tetramorium immigrans x2
Dorymyrmex bureni

Formica pallidefulva
Unknown sp x2

I personally think every ant is unique in it's own way. But the poneroid ants are quite out-of-this-world. I suggest getting the book "A Field Guide to the Ants of New England." It reviews every ant in and around New England, and each species is given it's own page or two.

Dolichoderus is one of my dream ants that I am yet to find. Their propodeum and petiole work together to look like a beer bottle opener!

There is also pheidole and temnothorax, which I think should be flying soon.
