I was searching for pogonomyrmex here in North Dallas the other day and I know they like open nests so I started thinking of a baseball diamond because they have good drainage and tend to stay dry. The field I was searching in was full of fire ants but I did see this humble mound, definitely not fire ant. I know it can be hard to identify without a microscope or a clear view of the gaster. Re: What are these?
a good way to ID them would be to catch a worker or two and take pics at your house

They look like Pogonomyrmex to me.
"God made every kind of wild beasts and every kind of livestock and every kind of creeping things;" (including ants) "and God saw that it was good." Genesis 1:25
