Caught in south Oklahoma o nthe north side of Lake Texoma on 3/25/18. Nest was on the ground in sandy soil, surrounded by what looked like carpenter ant swarmers.
Roughly 19mm major length, 12mm workers. Orange-red body with large, black head. Back half of the gaster is darker colored or black.
I know they're majors, but I was wondering if maybe the presence of so many swarmers outside the nest might indicate nuptial flights beginning soon. Can't figure out the species though! They looks like local carpenter ants, but the pictures I find are all red head with black gaster. They look very much like Camponotus consobrinus, but I'm far from Australia.

They are definitely not Consobrinus, as they are to dark around the thorax and gaster. Consobrinus are a far more lighter orange.
That is definitely a Camponotus genus though.
