New queen found on a parking lot, SE B.C. 5-6 mm, black/brown, very shiny abdomen, still has wings so photos are difficult for now.

naw, i would say lasius.
Proverbs 6:6-11

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

I measured her on a tape. I'm saying 6 mm because as soon as she was in the tube, she shoved her head into the cotton to get a drink. Re-checked, she is still max 6 mm. She is quite small. I'm not seeing a spike node. I did manage to get a better picture, but it still doesn't show under the wings. Her gaster is attached to the thorax at the bottom rather than the top.

I'm still skeptical about the measurement. She is Formica, which are usually 8-12mm. Is that converted from inches? I guess she could just be a "runt" of sorts.

Oops, sorry. You are right. Covered up a 5 mm mark. Actually 10 mm. Magnification can be a tricky business apparently.
