So Queen 8 was caught on august 6 with most of the others but when we were grabbing some more picture of her tonight we noticed a couple of copper-ish bumps on her gaster near her thorax. Upon closer inspection the were little insects (possibly mites?) wondering what we can do to get rid of these or if we should just release her again and let nature take its coarse.

Formica Spp. ~ You Could Attempt To Extract The Mites Manually By Utilizing A Pair Of Forceps.

All of the queens up to queen 7 look like Formica argentea. Queens 8 and 9 are from the shinier fusca complex of the fusca group -- likely Formica subaenescens or F. hewitti. The red queen seems to be Formica neoclara or F. neorufibarbis.

I wouldn't know about the mites. I have never experienced a failure which I can attribute to them, but then others say that they have.
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.

Any social parasites or semi-claistrals?

They're Fully-Claustral.
