Hey fellow ant enthusiasts! I made the official decision to start queen searching this past Sunday (07/23/17) and surprisingly, I was able to find a queen at my workplace the next day on Monday around 2:00 PM after lunch! The company is right on the border of North and South Carolina, specifically between Charlotte, NC and Fort Mill, SC. She is about 10mm long and was found without wings, searching for a place to dig between some brick grounding. I currently have her in a test tube setup (pictured below). I don't know what species she is, but she has a red coloring that gets darker as it gets to her abdomen. I initially thought of her as a fire ant but I'm really unsure. Could someone please help me identify?
This is a side picture of her. Her thorax looks quite large
This is an underbelly picture. I tried to get as close as I could, but I hope the image quality did not mess up in the process

She was identified as the species Solenopsis invicta, the red imported fire ant! ^_^ I'm super excited!

Was this during the nuptial flight in your area? I'm trying to find dates as close to my area as possible.
