Help with ID?
Caught this little girl in the Kawartha Lakes area of Ontario - East of Toronto. She's roughly 1 cm long but she moves pretty fast so it's hard to get an exact measurement. I found her when I was splitting wood for the fire place. Any ideas on what she is? I found her in a wooden log so I'm guessing some kind of small camponotus? And is that mesosoma big enough for a queen? I'm fairly new to ants so I have no clue.

It looks like a camponotus queen, I can't identify its species though.
Hi I'm Jack, How are you?
Re: Help with ID?
This seems like a Lasius social parasite.

I can agree, she does look an awful lot like 'Lasius umbratus' in the link you gave.
Good lord I don't even know how to start a social parasite... this could be a disaster if she is one/Queen.

Re: Help with ID?
Yes, I appreciate it! I'm reading through it right now. Might have to look around for someone who'd be willing to give me some workers to help her start. I literally only have 1 ant in my house right now, the new girl, so I don't have any established colonies.
EDIT: Actually, do you think it would work if I stole some young workers and broode from an outdoor colony? I have a nest of citronella odorous ants outside my house. They frequently bring their broode up under a big rock in my yard, I've tipped it once before and seen like hundreds of these little stinkers. I just looked in to them and apparently they are a Lacuis species (Either Lasius claviger or Lasius interjectus), do you think that would work?

Re: Help with ID?
That could work, although I'm unsure if L. umbratus can accept Acanthomyops workers.

Re: Help with ID?
Just thought of something, if she's a social parasite and she don't need a clustral chamber how should I be keeping her? Would the general testube set up still keep her comfortable? Should I be feeding her?
Also, Martialis and I did both say she looks like she could be Lasius(Lasius umbratus?) but can I get a positive ID from anybody? I'd like to be sure before I do anything with her.
