So a few weeks ago I found a single alate out in the middle of a field. I've kept her, and finally gotten around to processing the photos I was able to get of her. Opening the test tube in order to get clearer photos was so nerve wracking. She kept trying to fly! I usually ended up placing a finger a milimeter or two over her head so she couldn't flap her wings, but eventually I was able to get these photos.
She is 3mm long. I found her in an open grassy field that gets a lot of foot traffic, and she really likes moisture. She never ventures far from the wet cotton in her test tube. And if it is not already obvious, I caught her on Okinawa, Japan.
I'm told she is a myrmicine queen, but I am hoping these pictures will allow for better identification. Clearly I need a better camera, but until I get a coupling lens to go on my phone, this is the best I can do.
