Southern ontario ant for identification please
Hi everyone. I'm new to ant keeping as of this summer. I found a few queens on October 6 in the evening, and was wondering if any of you could identify her for me. She is 5 to 6 mm long and relish brown. Found in Brant county Ontario. Hopefully the pics are good enough for an ID. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2Kvj ... E02ZVhVRlU

L. Claviger based on coloring, and local, or Mrymica spp.? New at this so wait for better ID attempts.

I agree with L. Claviger. You need some sort of (Lasius) host workers and brood to get her to survive, as she's a temporary social parasite.DBrown wrote:Hi everyone. If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.

Thank you all for identifying this species. Happy to know what they are, sad because I have no ants to put her with. And when I say her I mean 24. What should I do. Here are a few more pics.

It's quite possible your house has a Lasius colony nearby. Mine has two, and I've stolen pupae from the ore than once. You might want to take them using a wet q-tip, along with a few workers.DBrown wrote:Thank you all for identifying this species. Hey if your looking to give some away, I am now interested in getting a few more of these parasitic queens. I have a small Lasius neoniger colony and I found a Lasius Claviger queen so I've made up a little test tube with callow workers, pupae, larvae and eggs. I put the Claviger queen in there and so far so good. However chances of success are extremely small so I'd love to have more than one opportunity. Anyway let me know before you release 24 queens or something. I live in Cambridge and can come get some.

That's a great idea I think I'll give it a try.Martialis wrote:It's quite possible your house has a Lasius colony nearby. Mine has two, and I've stolen pupae from the ore than once.
