I think the ruler in the pictures is in inches rather than cm? Though I thought of Lasius as well, that would make them way too big for lasius wouldn't it?
It looks like the ruler in the first picture is in centimeters/milimeters to me. That would make the queens about 8 to 10 mm long :?:
Otherwise, maybe it's Formica sp ??
I don't know I am confused. The ruler looks like is has measurements according to the metric system, so mm and cm. But he said they were slightly less than 2 cm, maybe a readout error?

The ruler in the 2nd picture has other measurements like 1/8th, so I am guessing that is in inches.
I'm so sorry for the confusion! The 1st pic is in centimeters and the 2nd is in inches.

My original thought was Lasius Neoniger but they seemed a little large for that. Although, they are a lot smaller than my Camponotus Pennsylvanicus.

I really appreciate the feedback so far, though!

FYI, I do have them all in their own test tubes.

They look like lasius to me. Camponotus are usually 1.5 to 2 cm long big difference. To be sure you can look at there workers when they hatch. Also what state/country do you live in? If you live in the US then lasius is flying and camponotus is mostly not.

Thanks Antnest8. That was my thinking too. I live in Columbus, OH, so the timing says Lasius but they seemed a little large for that. I was mostly just fascinated to see so many of them together like that. I only saw 10-12 but there likely could have been more!

Well we'll know for sure when the workers come eventually. At least we know that they are not polygenous and fully clausteral. The two most important things for founding.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes of these queens! So far this year, I've caught 9:
  • 1 - Tetramorium
  • 2 - Camponotus Pennsylvanicus
  • 6 - Whatever these ladies turn out to be
