Another queen for id
Queen is 18-20 mm
Caught in North Central Alabama
Caught under lights in parking lot at 9:00 pm yesterday.
Cannot tell from pictures head and thorax are darker red than the rest of her. Her gaster has more yellow than the pictures show.
I am thinking maybe Camponotus castaneus. Please I'd for me.

Anyone able to Id this queen?
Re: Another queen for id
Checked on her this morning, she has pulled off her wings. She also has settled down nicely and now has an egg . Really hoping she is fertile, would love to start a colony with her.
Re: Another queen for id
Camponotus Castaneus usually only get to be 13-15 mm.Varanid wrote:Anyone able to Id this queen?
this may be Camponotus Americanus at 18 mm.
not sure though, as my amercanus have a slightly darker head than yours. could just be a local difference though.

Now that she has calmed down a bit and shed her wings was able to get a more accurate measurement, looks like she is actually around 15 mm.
