Queen # 1 is 13 mm, found in Southern BC about 3 weeks ago. I thought she was C. modoc, but she is a bit small and looks different from my other modoc colonies. Her head is enormous but her gaster is smaller and more round in shape.
Queen #2 is 15 mm and found in the same area at the same time

Vicinus for the #2 queen seems reasonable, although she seems more slender and lighter in the body than the last one I had. The #1 queen has the matt black colour, but no reddish legs, and the gaster seems round rather than oval. She doesn't appear to have the light and dark bands caused by the hairs on the gaster.
This is one of my other modoc queens. While her gaster is distended, it is longer than wide and the colour changes due to the bands of hairs are visible.

The gaster just isn't as full.

Okay, thanks. I'll go with that.
