Hello everyone! I am very, very new to antkeeping, in fact, I am looking to go find my first ever queen next year, I do know what kind of genus/family i am looking for ( check signature!) But, I don't know where and when to look, I have a few gardens and life less then 5 kilometers away from a nice big natural enviroment with small lakes, groeps of trees and have a few forests around, ample opertunity!

But I need help knowing when and how to go looking and where to find them.

I know to be on the look out for Lasius Niger and Tetramorium ??? (don't know who's )
I also know that I should keep an eye out for Ants that might be a step to far when it comes to experience. so What ants NOT to get would be nice to know too!

Can you guys help me out?
(Looking at this now this might be in the wrong spot, can someone please move this to the right spot? (writen when posted in the species ID center)

Here's a useful site antmaps.org ;)
Hibernating: (all)

Parasitic Lasius:2

Founding:
Tetramorium Immigrans:2

Colonies:
Tetramorium Immigrans:1
Formica Spp:3

I'm new to ant keeping so my colonies are all still in test tubes. :?

I never use antmaps because it is incomplete and often incorrect. people false identify ants ant it is not an exhaustive list by all means.
Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

I know its incomplete, but it is useful to know a few of the ants that live in the area, and I didn't recommend it for use of ID's

Antmaps is probably one of the best distribution resources out there -- you just have to keep in mind that it is based in Japan and a little bit of the info in other countries can be outdated. Otherwise, I can't sing its praises enough.
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.

Hi. I found my ants near a park. I found 6 of 7 lanius negar queens. In 15min. First time looking.

Once you have 1 the rest will follow.
They are small but you will see them clearly.
Even see them fly.

Planning to go hunting this year

Hope this will help.
