I figured it's about time the news got here: using genetic analysis and male anatomical features, taxonomists have recognized our North American pavement ants to be Tetramorium immigrans, a species which invaded some time ago from the Mediterranean.

edit: We do have Tetramorium in North America which aren't T. immigrans (including some endemic species), but this is our most common pavement ant by far.

OOH! Good to know!
Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
