I was thinking has any one tried cornstarch instead of a talc powder barrier? Because I keep on forgetting to get baby powder and Vaseline is not the best (I've had several escapes). and if you know any other barrier substitutes please share them.

Not all white powders are equal...

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Well, since corn starch is organic matter, the microorganisms that colonize on the exposed food will probably mitigate its effectiveness over time, if it ever works at all.
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.
