what if you put a acrylic box that has drilled holes in the bottom that extends up above the top with a tube connected to it at the top. it would make a walk way for the ants up and you can also apply a barrier on the outside of the box.
Hmm could you sketch it out and take a pic?

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Did you get it done? If so, could we see it?

Also, one thing I was always afraid of, is the sand collapsing on the ants and burying them. Is that possible?

And what about the humidity? How do you regulate that?

Yeah it turned out to fail..... Tons of escapes and yeah the whole sand thing was a problem.

Mostly because the water was causing the sillicone and hot glue to separate from the frame letting the ants out.

That's why it's wiser to first test such things with a closed setup and then if there are no ants on any unwanted place you can open the top.
Doing some proper research is the best way to start an antcolony.
