Has anyone ever tried using amber or red cellophane to make the nest "dark" yet visible? Heard about this recently. Some say it works. Anyone tried it?

yep, I use it. It is usually called red photography paper. Seems to work .They act like the nest is dark and go crazy when I take it off.

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
