Will any sand work?

I'm building an ant enclosure for my son. We poured the sand into the "tunnel area"? (don't know what it's called). I did pack it down, but here's the question. The sand flows pretty easily, how would the ants make tunnels and chambers without them just collapsing? I don't really have access to non-treated dirt which is why I used sand.
I had read somewhere to just keep the sand wet, but the sand dries out pretty fast so I'm not sure that's viable.

By tunnel area do you mean nesting space or outworld?

For nest the sand is fine you just need to hydrate it like 1 time a week at different parts of the nesting area each time to help prevent mold.

For outworld use less than an inch of sand that way they will prefer the nest.

Are you doing a terrarium? (Nest and outworld in the same spot)
Why don’t more people like ants?
Is anyone from Wyoming who wants to sell ants?
