do you think red tint would be enough to put on the glass but still be able to view the ants in there Formicarium without them being bothered by the light?

I would just get a black piece of paper and set that in front of the glass. When you want to see them just don't leave it off for more than ten minutes.
Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?
There are so many fascinating ants right where you live!
