I don't see anything particularly wrong with these "tackle-box formicariums". Visibility tends not to be the best and sometimes the lids aren't the most secure. An important thing to note is to seal around the bottom of the water chamber, otherwise water WILL flow underneath those plastic dividers and flood the nest. I'm probably forgetting something else.AntLove5Ever wrote:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slse_qq2SXU

Oh yeah, I remember the thing I forgot! There's a chance you'll need to screen the hole where you add water. Ants can escape through there with this design.RainbowScience wrote:I don't see anything particularly wrong with these "tackle-box formicariums". That is my journal, I am building one like this but, making it a bit better, in my opinion. Give it a look. I am working through it now so, I can help you with tips.
The tackle box I use has 3 completely separate parts, so water under the dividers is not an issue. I did drill holes for the water but, I used the smallest bit I had and even the water only barely drips through, without cotton. I'm hoping once the area is filled with cotton, it will keep the ants from escaping. If they manage to get through, I can always add some screen because my water area will be easily accessible.
Let me know what you think!
EDIT: I address the low visibility and bad lid issue by getting rid of the lid and adding an acrylic top. A sheet of acrylic is like 4 bucks at home depot. Haha. If I ever need to clean the formicarium, I will simply make a new one and move the colony into the new home since, well, they are so cheap to make.. haha!
