Ant Science Project

Hey guys. I recently had an idea for my high school science project and I'm going to use ants. I am thinking about experimenting with different house hold substances to use as ant deterrents. The purpose is because I do not like using pesticides to kill the ants, so I want to find a harmless, but effective substance to deter the ants. Thanks! :D

Petroleum jelly/Vaseline is what I have to prevent my ants escaping. Can't say if it works well as my colonies are still just queens with eggs.

Check what other people use to prevent their ants escaping.

I've heard that ants don't like copper, anyone got experience with that as outbreak protection ?
