Queen Care
Tomorrow, I'm going to pick up my Camponotus sp. queen that I bought off of GAN. She had two workers, but the second one died. I'm going to start them off in an AC Test Tube Portal V2. This is what's in it: top left: water tube, bottom left: sugar water tube, top right: empty tube, bottom right: queen tube. I was wondering if that sounded like a good setup for now, and if anybody has some good suggestions for early colony care of carpenter ants. Also, when can I start feeding them baby Dubias?
Keeper of:
Solenopsis invicta
Camponotus pennsylvanicus
Pseudomyrmex gracilis x2
Crematogaster laeviuscula
Odontomachus haematodus
Looking for:
Pogonomrymex rugosus
Atta texana
Anything that isn't a fire ant...

Sounds good! You might want to try starting off with a roach leg. Only when your colony has many more workers can you feed whole roaches.AntsTexas wrote: ↑Sat Apr 08, 2017 10:35 pmTomorrow, I'm going to pick up my Camponotus sp. queen that I bought off of GAN. Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
Keeping Tetramorium immigrans, Tapinoma Sessile

Ok, I gave them a drop of honey today. I'll be giving them a cricket leg on Wednesday.idahoantgirl wrote: ↑Sun Apr 09, 2017 7:49 pmSounds good! You might want to try starting off with a roach leg. Re: Queen Care
Drosophila (vinegar) flies are an excellent food for ants, especially young colonies. I find that only more mature colonies will accept larger prey items.
If you enjoy my expertise and identifications, please do not put wild populations at risk of disease by releasing pet colonies. We are responsible to give our pets the best care we can manage for the rest of their lives.
