ant barrier for small ants

Here in California, there are many small ants like tapinoma sessile that I am keeping and they seem to be able to get through/over baby powder and rubbing alcohol. I need a cheap alternative barrier that will keep small ants in but I can't get insect-a-slip because it costs too much for me. Any ideas?

Maybe vaseline will work?

I haven't tried that yet. Thanks for the idea! :)

I've found that my tetramorium could climb over baby powder and alchohol, but they cannot climb over straight baby powder, without rubbing alcohol.
Proverbs 6:6-8

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

I recently acquired some Argentine ants and use vegetable oil. Just apply a thin layer around the top inside, and they just slip down. Kinda funny watching them try to escape.
