Ant clay??? Silica??

1. Is aquarium grade white silica sand safe digging medium for ants? ( c.nicobarensis) I will rise out the finer particles

2. Anthouse sells ant sand with 20% clay to avoid tunnel collapse, i need more information, what kind of clay is it and where can i buy some to mix with the silica sand

3. Does anyone have experience using extra virgin olive oil to contain large colonys? I'm reluctant to remove my water moat but i need to expand soon and water is very inconvenient, oil seems the cleanest easiest option, but is it effective

1 the aquarium grade sand would do perfectly. if you are worried you can boil it just in case. :)

2 I have no idea sorry

3 what is your setup? water moats are always nice but baby powder and alcohol (talcum powder) will work if you have glass/acrylic walls. If you want to be extra safe you can order Fluon (insect-a-slip). Although Vaseline is also ideal my experience was not that good with it for my c. pennsylvanicus.

3. I am aware of the other options you mentioned, but olive oil is invisible, the others are all unsightly and ruin my view of the colony, i am testing olive oil but i wanted to know if someone has tested it more extensively than me

i have them in a 20cm by 30cm plastic aquarium half filled with dirt, i am going to move them into a 75cm by 20cm clear plastic box half filled with white sand so i can see them better

I have seen this, it is the reason i am curious about oil, i'd like to hear it from a large colony owner, will it last against thousands
