They would appreciate a sugar-water test tube somewhere in the setup as well.

Question. Do I have to hibernate them every year?

I suspect they live longer than a year. I've had a Tetramorium sp E colony for 3.5 years now and they seem to be going strong. (Very similar to M. minimum. They would have to live long enough at least to create alates in order to preserve the species.

Regarding your question hibernation, it is up to you as an ant keeper. I think the general consensus is to hibernate them every year though, at least for a couple of months.

I have a small brood of smaller light colored almost white ants that I accidently excavated with the m.min. colony
