what happens to unpurchased queens?
I'm briefly considering joining the Gan project in a year or two. I didn't collect any extra queens this nuptual flight season and I probably won't catch any more this year. But I had a question. If I were to join the gan project in a few years and I caught like, 20 queens one season, but only a few were purchased. Then it's time for those 20 colonies to move into formicaria's. What would I do? I obviously wouldn't be able to provide that many formicarias for them all! Anyways, I've just been thinking about that and I was wondering what a gan farmer would do in that case.

Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Release them back into the wild. After all that's where they came from. Mikey has released his fair share having moved from Canada and the other places he has lived.idahoantgirl wrote:I'm briefly considering joining the Gan project in a year or two. Releasing ants is actually a rather bad thing. Even native ones.

If you release them they will probably die, but it won't hurt the environment as long as they are native. They will probably die because queens that already have founded a colony find it very difficult to found another one when released, and they enter the territory of another colony who will probably attack them.

Hello there! Great question. There are a couple things you can do. First, you can either lower your prices. Some prefer to give their ants away for free. Second, you can release them.idahoantgirl wrote:I'm briefly considering joining the Gan project in a year or two. Re: what happens to unpurchased queens?
As a GAN farmer myself for a little over a year, I have dealt with this issue a bit and will deal with it soon in a bigger way as I have lots of queens right now with second generation workers. I have given some away for free to friends/family, done a "buy one get one free" for those coming to me from GAN, released a few of them, and then done my best to house the others.
AntsCanada will be releasing a few new products within a week or so, one of which will help facilitate the keeping of small colonies without the need for a formicarium. Should help us GAN farmers a bit. I can definitely say that it has helped me already.
