Major vs Queen

Hello everyone!

This is probably a standard noob question, but yesterday I was queen hunting and, after capturing an ant, I would spend a few minutes observing it to determine whether she was a major or a queen. It seemed that 9/10 times, those ants were majors, even though they were walking fairly straight and by themselves. Their thorax were just not big enough and did not have a plateau. Was I correct in my conclusions? I know it would be a lot more useful to provide pictures, but I did take any unfortunately.

FYI, I live in Nova Scotia and the ants were Camponotus, most likely Novaeboracensis.

Thanks for the help!

Yes you seem to be on the right track at identifying them, Also look for wing scars! :D

Awesome, thanks! Since then, I found 4 queens: a Lasius and 3 Camponotus. :D
