Solenopsis and a unknown species flew today in Tuscaloosa Alabama after the rains.

When found:
530pm
90*F
Sunny

Really glad the flights were not over here! I got 6 solenopsis and 3 unknown queens. Found them in the parking lot of the business I work for! My boss thought I was nuts sprinting to the truck to get test tubes!

Interesting!
When I caught my small solenopsis sp. queens, those unknown species you caught are also around their nuptial flights.

Their heads where a bit small so I just figured they were males and I didn't bother to catch them. Their antenae almost seems like its one segment and kind of rotates in a circular motion, right?

I've seen the solenopsis males and they too are reddish in color. These are pitch black in comparison. I know this be cause I dropped one of those solenopsis queens in by accident and they went to fighting right away. :o
Also the thorax isn't as big on the solenopsis males.

To be perfectly honest I'm not sure. I was so hyped on finding the solenopsis queens that I didn't even check. They are all in test tubes now and don't want to disturb them. I'll check in a week or two and if they are still alive and now eggs I'll take it as they were males (like someone else said).

Biggest thing that gets me is that I've seen the solenopsis males and yes they have the pointed butt, the color is red not pitch black.
