Really hoping to catch a fertile queen this year in Western Ky. Caught a queen carpenter last year but she wasn't fertile. I play tennis so if I play at night and turn on the court lights hopefully I'll see some there but if anyone else is around this area and notices activity let me know. Seems like there is such a small window to catch these things here :(

Last year we had a good month or so of warm weather before they flew. The weather this year has been very unpredictable. This is only about the 2nd week of consistent warm weather we've had this year so I hope I haven't already missed it.

Michigan has an unexpected heat wave and it has been in the high to mid Eighty's for the past couple days and will cool down now. No carpenter flights yet but we just had a large thunder storm. keep your eyes peeled. also the temperature is going to be 75 in two days and that is when the storming should stop. is that warm enough for carpender ants?

I found a semi-cholesterol queen walking around, not sure of the species, though. I don't think that there was a nuptial flight in Ontario, Canada, because she was likely foraging for food after winter.

WOW....got home from a friends house at around 11p.m. My driveway has a motion light, it comes on, I look down as I enter the door, and what do you know!? A Camponotus pennsylvanicus queen!! Well...I'm no pro but I'm 95% sure that's what it is. I guess she was about to make a home in one of the holes in the concrete. What puzzles me though, is that she didn't have wings, but also she was wondering along a line of small ants. Presumable a Monomorium species. From everything I've read though, she is WAY to large to be the queen of that species. My point being, I wonder if she was an outlier or if they have flown. It rained this morning so If they were going to fly I really didn't think it would be the same day as the rain. I was under the assumption that they might fly a day or so AFTER a rain.

This is in western Ky by the way, so if you're nearby, keep an eye out. With finals over I will definitely be hitting the woods tomorrow in search of more queens.

Update in Ky:

Just caught another camponotus pennsylvanicus this time searching in rotten logs. She had made a nest but no brew were found. She was fairly shallow in the log and I'm not very experienced with catching them this way so I don't know whether she just recently burrowed there or if that is just how shallow they first go. If it is the ladder then there must have already been a large flight. I also saw one other queen but she escaped after I peeled the bark away.
