I’ve caught a couple Formica so far, you think they are flying mass scale yet in Illinois?

Depending on the amount then yes. A spider web outside my window had a formica sp. in it so I’d assume the flying now.
An ants' strength can be rivaled by few animals compared to relative body size.

First post ever - Super Excited!
I was out camping this weekend and I literally sat on top of a Nuptial Flight in southern Kentucky this past weekend. I of course initially freaked out and started capturing everything in sight . After a few I calmed down enough for common sense to kick in and realized they had just came out to start the flight so I released all 7 elates I had caught.

Formica subsericea flew yesterday in northern IL. Many queens still out searching for the perfect spot to found a colony.
