The queen is dead.. One of my cats found the tube and pulled out the cotton. I guess it's back to the drawing board.. I have more time to get my stuff together..

Sorry to hear that. Yea cats are very curious and that's for sure if they see something move.

I bought and cut a few PVC pipe 1" longer than the test tubes to provide the dark and hide them from the cats.. If I find another winter ant queen I'll put her in the pantry (no pets zone).

Holy Cow! I bought a jewelers lens to get a better view of the queen.. It turns out she's not dead but she is injured. I'll still try to get another queen, I'm going to try for a carpenter. My wife is allergic to stinging insects..

Yes that's something you have to take into consideration when picking your ant species to keep. I have Solenopsis (fire ant) and they sting and are very aggressive, but I don't mind them at all.

I'm just starting to get into ant keeping as a question (or to any person reading this) I live in Michigan (river rouge). Just how many different types of ants could I find around me. I've been looking and I'm getting different conflicting information. Any recommendations for a starter??

It's been months since I've posted anything else on my queen.. she ate her eggs, but that was in September.. as of now there are 7 workers and she's doing great. She's stubborn and won't move in to a new test tube! I need to clean the one there in, but instead there treating the second tube like it's an out world. So I'm bending to her will and I just change the other tube and give them food in it. If I can find my macro lense I'll get some pictures and post a link to a photo bucket or make a YouTube video. Hope everyone's colony's are doing well...

Any ant in the subfamily Formicinae should not sting.
