My first attempt at a colony..

Let me start this off by stating my wife is the one that found my queen April 16th. I had my reservations that it was a queen let alone fertile. I checked on her today and found she has two eggs.

Cool! What species is she? What nest do you plan to put her in?

My wife and I think she is Prenolepis imparis.. We have a little time before she needs to move out of the tube. We are considering our options for her new home. But I think we are going to make it..

I love Prenolepis imparis! They are a good find. I caught 5 queens at the beginning of the year but only 1 is alive right know. Hopefully she will be successful

So my wife peeked today, I talked to her about not being impatient. But I took it as a moment to check on her.. My wife see's 7 eggs, but I think it's 6. I plan to wait until she has two or three workers before I get them to move to a fresh test tube with a drop of honey. Thanks for reading my posts, it's nice to know if I need a few tips you guys are there to help..

I'm new to ant-keeping myself, but it looks like Prenolepis imparis to me.

cool! When I was looking into making a nest I thought that this style of nest would be cool:

It's made out of a simple bead organizer. If I were to make it I would probably cut the lid off and replace it with a piece of glass for better visibility and more escape proof. You can also make plaster of paris, grout, and ytong formicariums.

This is a great idea for a new colony.. I'm going to totally try this, and my wife is on board (as long as they don't get out). I'll try to get it on video. I'm also going to start posting from my laptop.
