MooreAnts Journal #1 My adventure begins : Lasius Niger
Posted: Wed Feb 07, 2018 4:29 pm
I just bought some Lasius Niger ants from Antsrus.co.uk because I was too excited to wait for their nuptial flight season and catch my own.
These ants are native to Europe and some parts of Asia and America. Widely known as Black garden ants.
Perfect for my first ant colony as they are easy to look after, native and abundant. They look pretty happy, but also very docile. This might be because Lasius Niger usually hibernate from October till march because of cold weather. But I'm keeping them warm so it should be fine.
I wanted to keep a sort of diary on them so I will save updates here as they go on.
The Queen came with 11
workers, and about 20eggs, it's hard to see because of the fogged plastic which sucks, but I managed to spread them out a bit when feeding them some protein shake and got a good count! I'm still finding it fascinating watching them take care of their young.
I cant see any pupa right now but I can spot a few larvae squirming around.
What do you guys think I should call my queen? My girlfriend and I can't think of one!!
Also what should we call the colony?
I like this idea from AntsCanada, like most people :')
Also if I get anything wrong please let me know!!
If you want to see images, you'll have to check my blog, I can't figure out how to post them here yet! :/ Sorry guys!
If you guys could let me know how to post picture that would be great. I'm using my android phone currently.
