Hitch3’s Camponotus Consobrinus Journal

Hi all,

This is a journal for my Camponotus Consobrinus colony. It currently has 1 queen, no workers, lots of eggs, and a couple small larvae.

Some information on the queen:

She was caught on the 4th December 2017. She was put straight into a test tube setup. She then raised her first brood to the beginning of the larval stage before eating them because of stress on the 28th December 2017. After that, I moved her to a Ant’s Australia size 1 founding formacarium (Acrylic.) She then laid her second batch of eggs on the 4th January 2018. I fed her a drop of honey and a cricket leg on the 10th of January 2018 because she would need extra energy and protein for the extra month that she had to fast for her first workers. She gobbled that up quickly. I have left her alone in a dark cupboard from then on.

Now that this journal is up to date, I will continue to update weekly. Pictures in next post.

Cheers!

**UPDATE**

Hi all,

The queen is doing well! Larvae have now hatched (though you can barely see it because of the horrible photos.)

Based on a previous (and now dead  ) colony of this species, and how long it took for the first nanitics to appear for that colony, I should be expecting our queen’s first workers on the 14th of March. :D

Photo Time! :D

As you can see, she is pretty comfortable in her founding formacarium. It should last her to about 5-8 workers. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but for Camponotus, that can be half a year away.

I was thinking that I will only add a picture every two weeks (or every two updates) because I do not want to disturb the queen and move her into a place with a lot of light (which is where I take photos) too often. It is much easier on her and me.

If you have any questions about keeping this species, please feel free to ask!

Anyway, that’s about all for this update. Will be posting again next week.

Cheers!

Hi all,

Not too much has changed. The larvae have continued to grow and are pretty developed. The queen is going well too. I have a concern over feeding her. I usually wouldn’t feed a founding queen but since she has to fast for an extra month, (read first post) I was wondering if I should begin feeding her. :?:

Cheers!

I would think she has the protein from the larvae she ate and can go the extra month.

But with her carbohydrates, should I begin feeding honey?
