Crematogaster journal

I caught a Crematogaster sp. queen on June 29, almost a month ago. I don't know what species she is, but the Crematogaster genus has a lot of species so that would be hard to determine. This picture was taken on the day I caught her.

Since then, she has laid eggs and now has larvae and I will update this when her larvae have gotten large. I think her larger larvae are about halfway grown right now.

My Crematogaster queen's larvae are pretty large now! Several look like they will be pupating soon based on their size. She still only has a few eggs, but she probably has between 10 and 15 larvae, with more than half of them being the largest.

I checked on my Crematogaster queen yesterday hoping to see some pupae, and there is one! There might even be more by now though. This is so exciting, I can't wait to see little Crematogaster nantics running around!

They usually fly in August and September, but where I live they actually flew in June. I saw one queen in early June but I was too busy at that moment and didn't catch it. Luckily, I saw a second queen in late June so I caught it this is her Journal! I still haven't seen a third one though, but I'm expecting to see some this month and next month.

Crematogaster get an extra, early/mid-summer flight in southern North America.

Thats awesome, I got my queen June 2015. I need to post a pic of her and all of her workers and brood. She has moved in to an Omni nest small. They only occupy one chamber right now. I cheated and put cotton in the surrounding chambers so she would move in b\c I knew if it was to big she wouldnt. Now I took the cotton out and they blocked off the other chamber with dirt and insert. Its really cool to see them do that. I think she is at 50-100 workers now.

Nantics!

A few days ago I noticed my Crematogaster queen's pupae were getting darker, so I knew there would be nantics very soon. Now there is one! It is gray in color but it may get darker as its exoskeleton hardens. It must have just eclosed-- there are more on the way.

Here is the wonderful nantic. Also you can see the pile of brood, which contains several pupae. It looks like three or four of them are going to hatch soon.

Here is the queen. Her gaster has gotten so much smaller!

My Crematogaster colony now has 5 workers! I put a drop of honey in there when there was 1 nantic, and they have eaten the whole drop. The workers are pretty dark colored, but they are more dark brown than black like the queen is.
