Why do you never put the queen into a formacarium before she has 20 workers?

What would it be bad if I put my ant queen in a hybrid nest before she has layed eggs?

Yes. when there is too big of a space, she will not feel comfortable, will get stressed out, and end up eating all her eggs. I've also heard that the workers will get lost... i'm a bit more skeptical on that one because of pheromones, but many people do say it.Firecatto21 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 09, 2018 12:34 amWhat would it be bad if I put my ant queen in a hybrid nest before she has layed eggs?
Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Biggest issue is that they will use the formicarium as a garbage dump, which will cause it to mold. So you will have to move them anyway. On top of that they feel better is small spaces, so it does no good putting them in there. At most I like to have a test tube connected to a test tube portal, then I use the portal as a small outworld, and they still feel safe in their test tube.
Sometime they drag the food back into their test tube and it gets moldy, but its easy to just hook another tube up. They move eventually, usually within a week if they have workers.
