If you leave them outside it really depends on what region you're from and the species. For instance I live far north. It can get around -25 - -30 F at night for a common temp in Jan.. even colder on ocassional nights. No way are any of my ants surviving that outside or even in garage. (Box or not).
Also in my (personal) observations, some ant species can withstand colder temps for longer then others. (My camponotus seem to have fewer dead after their hibernation then most others)
My best adice is to put your fridge on warmest setting. Wrap their tube (if they still live in one) in paper towels too keep light from bothering them and leave them in back of fridge for a good 3-5 months (region depending)
