Sugar water is fine. Other options include
Honey water
fruit slices
fruit juice
corn syrup
cake crumbs
really anything sweet that isnt artificial sweetners.

consider its ways and be wise!
It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Cool thanks, what about protein, same amount, less, more. And how long do camponotus take to settle into the test tube and lay. I know it's a lot of questions but I've never had camponotus
Thx.

oh, if your queens are fully claustral then you can stop giving them sugar water. they dont need it and it can stress them out. You only need to feed them when the first worker arrives. They also don't need protein until their first worker arrives. Once the workers arrive, you can give them small amounts of food. (in an outworld, not the tube). Rame a 1 inch section of drinking straw in between the side of the tube and the exit cotton. this makes a nice little passageway to the outworld. (all this is done after workers arrive.) You can't over feed ants. So giving a small section of mealworm or cricket 9 (or a couple fruit flies) and wait till the section of food dries out till they can no longer harvest it's goodies. Then remove the section. They wont be able to clean a mealworm to the outer skeleton thill they are several hundred workers strong. As far as how long it takes for the queens to settle down and have a colony, watch this AntsCanada vid.

Remember to only check on your queens once a week. if you can go longer, do. The more you stress them out by checking on them, the longer it will take for them to lay eggs. Camponotus are especially finicky and are very sensitive to being checked on often.

i think your asking if all the tubes should have water, not sugar water? If so, yes. Don't put your queens in a sugar water setup. They dont need food, and the sticky sugar water will cover her in stickyness and can kill her and the brood. she just need clean water in her tube :)

So I'm going to have to move all the queens out and re do the test tubes as less stressful as I can.
