I have only really heard of this working out in the desert. It's better to just find a queen above ground.

The ants in your area are not desert ants, and would not create distinct founding chambers like in the desert. The ant season is only beginning -- you'll be able to find plenty of queens above ground, the easy way.

Camponotus will sometimes fly at night, but they fly during the day too.

I must ask if you know anything about Camponotus castaneus flights? That's one of the two other species I want. They are very beautiful. Of course I have looked at all the nuptial flight sheets and so on but was wondering if you've had any personal experience or know anyone that has with this species close to my location possibly.
Keeping:
Camponotus subbarbatus
Formica pallidefulva x2
Formica subsericea x4
Lasius sp
Tetramorium immigrans x2
Dorymyrmex bureni

Founding:
Formica pallidefulva
Unknown sp x2
